How to use curtains and blinds together on the same window
The trick is knowing whether the daytime or nighttime solution is most important
Essentially, curtains and blinds can be categorised by what they do. During the day you need to soften bright sunlight and glare and maintain privacy. At night time you need rooms to be dark and a good temperature. So, let’s group our curtains and blinds into daytime and nighttime solutions:
- Sheer curtains
- Light filter roller blinds
- Sunscreen roller blinds
- Decorative sheer roller blinds
- Sheer roman blinds
- Sheer honeycomb blinds
- Light filter honeycomb blinds
- Venetian blinds
- Vertical blinds
- Blockout and tripleweave curtains
- Lined curtains
- Velvet curtains
- Blockout roller blinds
- Blockout honeycomb blinds
- Lined roman blinds
- Blockout and tripleweave roman blinds
- Velvet roman blinds
- Venetian blinds
- Vertical blinds
These combos are practical to manage
Pair any blockout and tripleweave, lined or velvet curtain over top of any light filter, sheer or sunscreen roller, roman or honeycomb blind (fitted inside the window frame).
This kind of combo means you can open and close the curtain as needed and the blind can always remain down – easy.

These combos put style first
Or pair any sheer curtain over top of any blockout roller or honeycomb blind, or blockout and tripleweave, lined or velvet roman blind.
These combos are little fussier because you would need to open the sheer curtain to raise and lower the blockout blind and then close the sheer curtain every time. But many people choose it because they love the look of sheer curtains.

What about vertical and venetian blinds?
A slim slat venetian blind could work behind a curtain, but we actually think venetians and verticals are their own ‘double solution’ because with a slight adjustment of the angle of the slats you can let in or block out light to varying degrees as needed, even tilt them a different way at different times of the day. Then, at night, they close completely
A few final style tips
- Tie it all together with a pelmet. It’s not only a decorative finish to hide the tracks, it helps better insulate too.
- Mix it up with different colours, patterns and types of curtains and blinds around your house. Different rooms will suit different looks and product functions.
- Find inspo in the wall colour. Choose a pattern where the wall colour features or go for the same tone in a different shade (lighter or darker). Or go for something directly opposite on a colour wheel to contrast, or colours either side on the colour wheel to complement.
